Best Busy Books for a 2 year old
Being two years old is challenging, both for the child and the parent. It’s a time of intense emotional and physical development, and sometimes I think of it as the “teenage phase” of early childhood. When my older son turned two, I was surprised by the change—it was like a switch flipped overnight. My once-happy, easygoing little boy suddenly became a bundle of emotions. He cried, fought over every small thing, and pushed every limit. The sudden shift left me exhausted and, to be honest, it took a toll on my mental health.
When my second child came along, I was determined to do things differently. Balancing the needs of both children was overwhelming; they were curious explorers, always diving into their surroundings and often leaving messes in their wake. I couldn’t help but worry about the cleanup, and screens quickly became a fallback. Don’t get me wrong—I love being a mom! But like many of you, there were moments when I was most vulnerable, needing some “me time” or simply a chance to focus.
The early mornings and dinner times were particularly challenging. My boys were both early risers, and while I tried to have a quiet cup of coffee, their energy was already through the roof. Playing with noisy toys in the morning wasn’t ideal, especially as sibling disagreements often turned up the volume! It was during COVID that I stumbled upon a solution—busy books. And they completely changed our routine.
I started small, with a simple book just to see if it would capture their attention. (You can download my free template below if you’d like to try it!) Much to my relief, they loved it. From there, I began to experiment, adding colors, themes, and activities centered on their interests. Soon, I was making busy books for those precious quiet moments. They were like little treasures, something special that only came out at restaurants, during travel, or those critical morning and dinner hours.
This post is for those moms who might feel the same way I did, in the thick of it with a busy two-year-old. If you’re looking for ways to keep them engaged without screens, especially during those important quiet times, busy books could be your answer.
For two-year-olds, busy books don’t need to be complicated. At this age, simple matching activities can hold their attention while helping them build essential skills. Once they’ve mastered matching, you can gradually introduce sorting activities to keep things interesting.
Below, I’ve shared a few of my busy books specifically designed for two-year-olds. They’re packed with matching games that are perfect for little hands and minds.
After creating our first few busy books and seeing how much my kids loved them, I couldn’t stop there! I wanted something special, something that could grow with my younger child as he entered that wonderful, yet challenging, toddler stage. That’s when I designed our Toddler Busy Book—a perfect tool for curious 1- and 2-year-olds! This printable activity binder includes 20+ colorful, hands-on matching activities that capture young attention spans and help develop essential skills.
For those of you who may also be navigating the ups and downs of toddlerhood, I can’t say enough about how beneficial this book has been for us. Whether you’re looking to create a quiet, engaging moment or support your child’s early learning, this busy book could be just what you need. Here’s a look at what makes it so special.
Toddler Busy Book 1
Each page of this book is designed with purpose and joy in mind, focusing on foundational skills that promote early development without overwhelming your child. Here’s what’s included:
1. Cover Page:
- You can personalize the cover for your little one, making the binder feel extra special. Personalization makes them feel ownership over their own “big kid” book—my kids love showing off their covers!
2. Calendar Pages:
- Introducing the concept of days, months, and seasons at this young age helps toddlers grasp the basics of routines and order. With simple, colorful illustrations, your child can start learning to anticipate and understand the structure of a week, making transitions smoother.
3. English Alphabets:
- This page set is all about early literacy! Through fun matching games and visuals, your child becomes familiar with letters, building a foundation for language skills that will come in handy as they grow. My boys loved seeing their “special letters” for their names and connecting sounds with the images.
4. Numbers and Shapes:
- Here, your child can explore the basics of counting and shape recognition, sparking early math awareness. From matching shapes to counting objects, these activities make math concepts engaging and accessible. It’s such a relief to see them work on numbers quietly and independently!
5. Colors, Fruits & Vegetables:
- These pages are a fun way to explore the world of colors, fruits, and vegetables. Your toddler can enjoy activities that promote healthy eating ideas (bonus for us parents!), and identifying colors through foods helps connect learning to everyday life. You can even bring this knowledge into mealtimes—my kids love finding “their” colors on their plates.
6. Animals & Body Parts:
- Learning about animals and body parts is always a hit! This section helps toddlers connect to nature and themselves, teaching them basic anatomy through matching games. It’s an easy way to introduce topics like self-awareness, empathy for animals, and appreciation for the world around them.
7. First Words & Nature:
- By exploring early vocabulary related to nature and daily life, this section broadens your toddler’s language skills. Simple words and nature elements encourage curiosity and spark early conversation skills. It’s always rewarding to see their pride as they learn new words and start recognizing the world around them!
